Technological_Barriers

Technological Barriers:

"There's a silly notion that failure's not an option at NASA. Failure is an option here, the most important option to exist. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough." - Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX)

Obstacles to Success:

The Apollo missions needed to bring the men safely back to Earth. This would be a great technological breakthrough, one that hadn’t been done before. No one event in history had as many false trials as the moon landing, since many factors such as the weak force of gravity and the amount of fuel had to be considered.

"Technologies give us the facilities that lessen the difficult barriers of time and distance...everything else is a matter of human courage" - Emily Greene Balch (American economist and Nobel Prize winner)

Neil Armstrong stands near the flag of the USA that was placed on the moon shortly after landing. Ironically, the harsh space conditions have actually wiped out the colors of the flag, so the taperstry is now discolored and white. https://qz.com/1668128/we-may-have-misheard-neil-armstrongs-famous-moon-landing-quote/. Communication Limits:

"This is our destiny: to bilogically reach out, to chemically exist, and to explore the universe not just as atoms, but as wanderers and travelers. We must build to reach this holy grail of science." - Albert Einstein (German theoretical physicist)

One difficult task that was posed for NASA and their team was establishing a communication system that would hold out from start to end. This meant that the range of the signal had to be increased while maintaining its strength. Missions, like the earlier mentioned Apollo 7, were targeted at testing the equipment that was being developed to make sure it was intact for the landing.

"The great thing about the moon landing is that my grandmother got the first color TV in order to be able to see the moon landing that was in black and white." - Alfonso Cuaron (Mexican film director/producer)

NASA engineer examines a manual for the communication systems; the goal of NASA over the past couple of decades has been to improve on the designed communication technologies that were designed thanks to Apollo 11. It is now far easier for communication to go through in the depths of space with the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC). https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/news/comm_delay_assessment.
